Netscape Navigator Assistance
About the Netscape Navigator - The Netscape Navigator is a World Wide Web Browser which is used for accessing the vast amounts of information available on the World Wide Web (WWW). Netscape Navigator is a commercial software product and therefore should be registered pursuant to it's license agreement. Netscape allows users to download and utilize the software for a period of time on an assessment basis. Please read the license agreement packaged with the Netscape Navigator for complete details. Netscape Navigator will allow you to browse Web documents, download files, read and participate in usenet newsgroups, or send and receive electronic mail. A short discussion of each of these functions can be found on this page.
Downloading Netscape - 1. Click on the following link http://home.netscape.com/comprod/mirror/client_download.html to go to Netscape's Download Software page.

2. You will be presented with a form similar to the one shown above for selecting the software and version that you are interested in. At this time Version 2.01 is the most current and will never expire. Fill out the form and select the "click to display download sites" button.3. Netscape has several ftp (file transfer protocol) sites at the same location. There is no magic to selecting which site to download from so feel free to select one randomly.
4. Depending on the browser you are using a dialog box should pop up requesting information on how to save the selected file. Place the file in your \internet\download directory. If asked as an option, be certain to select "save as a binary file".
5. Depending on your connection speed, downloading this file may take a while so please be patient.

Unpacking and Installing Netscape - 1. Copy the .exe file that you downloaded into your \internet\dload\unpack directory. Run the .exe file and it will automatically begin to uncompress and extract the attached files into the current directory.
CAUTION:This is a self-extracting zip file. DO NOT unpack compressed files into your dload directory, it will become very difficult to organize these later if you do!
2. Run the "setup.exe" file that has been created in your \unpack directory. This will begin an installation program for you. Setup will begin automatically if you run the 32 bit version.
3. The first dialog box requests you to select a location in which to install Netscape. Select "browse" to select the directory to install into, we suggest "\internet\Netscape" (Note: if the directory doesn't currently exist, the program will create it for you). Now press "OK" to confirm this choice and then select "NEXT" to continue.
4. It is a good idea to continue to the Netscape Site when asked to find out more information about the product. However, this is not a required step.
5. A Netscape Program Group will be created for you. To run Netscape double-click the program icon.
Configuring Netscape - 1. To configure Netscape to work properly click on "Options" and then "Preferences" on the menu bar. Many of the items in this section are Preferences and are not required to run Netscape. One item that you will want to set is your "Home Page Location". We suggest setting "www.netsys.hn" (without quotes) as your home page.
2. Press the "OK" button.
3. Select "Options" on the file menu again and this time select "Mail and News Preferences" and select "Servers".
Mail Options:
Outgoing Mail Server: netsys.hn
Incoming Mail Server: netsys.hn
POP Username: Your netsys username (replace jsmith with your NetSys username in the pictured example)
Mail Directory: Netscape sets this automatically, we suggest using the default value.
Check for Mail: If you want to use Netscape to automatically check your mail, select the "Every" option and enter a value in the minutes box (20 is typical)
Your Name: Enter your real name the way you wish for it to show on your outbound mail.
Your Email: Enter your full email address (replace jsmith with your phoenix email username in the pictured example)
Return to Address: Enter your full email address (ie. same as above) unless you wish to receive your mail at a different location.
Your Organization: Enter your organization name here.
5. Select the "Organization" tab to continue configuring.
Remember Mail Password: If you will be using Netscape to retrieve your Mail check the "Remember Mail Password" box. Note: Some users elect not to select this box because others have access to their computer and will be able to download and read their mail.
6. These are all of the "required" entries. You may edit the other preferences to suit your needs and select the "OK" box.
7. Important: Select "Options" from the menu bar again and select "Save Options" to save all of the above changes.
Basic Navigating - 1. Entering URLs in the Location Box
Netscape’s Location Box lists the Uniform Resource Locator (URL) of the currently loaded document. This box can be edited directly, making it possible to quickly jump to a specific location on the Web. For example, if someone mails you a URL, simply copy (drag your cursor over the desired text and press CONTROL and C at the same time) it to the clipboard and paste (place your cursor where you would like for the text to be pasted, and press CONTROL and V at the same time) it into Netscape’s Location box and press Enter. If the URL is valid, the new page should be displayed almost immediately.
2. Moving backwards and forwards
If, for example, you entered a URL in the location box and then followed a hot link (typically in a different color and underlined) you can return to the original document by simply pressing the "back" key from the menu bar, you can press the "back" key several times to navigate all the way back to where you began if you desire. Under the same concept, you can navigate forward to pages that you have backed out of, by simply pressing the "forward" button.
3. Bookmarks
Netscape provides a simple Bookmark facility that lets you mark any URL for future reference. If, for example, you have currently loaded a web page about Bass fishing and you would like to bookmark the location for future reference, simply select "Bookmarks" from the file menu and then select "Add Bookmark". At a future time you can return to this bookmarked location by simply selecing "Bookmarks" from the file menu and then selecting the Web Site name that you wish to return to.
4. Netscape on-line Assistance Page
5. Use the handbook
Netscape has an on-line handbook that is viewable by simply pressing the "Handbook" key on the menu bar.
