    Unzipping mIRC
    1.  Run WinZip to uncompress the .zip file (double clicking the .zip file should automatically run WinZip if it is installed). Click here if you have NOT installed WinZip yet!

    2.  From inside of WinZip select the "Extract" key, then select the location for the files to be extracted to. Since mIRC does not need to be "Installed" with a setup program, you can extract directly into the /internet/mirc directory.

    3.  If you do not have a sub directory "mirc" yet, you can create one now by selecting the "Create Dir..." button in the bottom left hand corner of the window.

    4.  Once you have selected the directory where you want to extract this file, press the "Extract" button and the files will be extracted and placed in the directory you just created. BE SURE NOT to extract .zip and .exe files into your "dload" directory, it will be very difficult to organize later if you do.

    5.  Close WinZip.

    Setting up mIRC

    1.  Windows3.1 users are now ready to run the "mirc.exe" file located in the mirc directory. Note: Windows95/NT users should run "mirc32.exe"!

    2.  You will need to setup some parameters prior to using mIRC for the first time:

    A.  Select menu option "File", "Setup" You will be prompted for your Real Name, E-Mail, Nickname and Alternate Nick. The following are guidelines for filling these in:

    B.  Real Name: A value in this field is required. Others will be able to see whatever you enter here. It is acceptable on IRC to NOT enter your Real Name should you not choose. You may wish to enter just your first name or any other value. Unfortunately there are those that will harrass female users and we strongly suggest NOT entering your real name to protect against such unsolicted harrassment.

    C.  E-Mail: This field is required. Enter your "username" as it shows on your email address. Enter jsmith if your email address is jsmith@phoenix.net.

    D.  Nickname: This field is required. Select a "unique" nickname that you will be referred to on IRC as. There is a value to selecting a unique nickname and using the same nickname all the time. In our example we used the Nick "tiger", be sure to change this value. Unfortunately there are those that will harrass female users and we strongly suggest that females select nicknames that are "gender neutral" to avoid such problems.

Alternate Nickname: In the event the nickname you selected above is already in use, mIRC will use this nickname. It is common to use an alternate nick that is the same as your primary Nick with an _ (underscore). In our example we used "tiger_", be sure to change this value.

    F.  Now select an IRC server from the listing that you wish to use. We suggest the following IRC servers for communicating on EFnet:

Highlight the server you wish to utilize and select "OK"

    mIRC Options
    1.  Now select from the menu bar "File" "Options" and select the tab "Servers". Many of the better IRC servers require that you run Ident so check the box marked "Enable Ident Server" then select "OK".
    mIRC - First Steps
You are now ready to join a live IRC chat session.

    1.  Select the "Lightning Bolt" icon on the menu bar to connect to the IRC server that you selected earlier. If you connect successfully, the servers MOTD (Message of the Day) will scroll by and you are now ready to join a channel.

    2.  The syntax for joining a channel is /join #channelname. Many Phoenix DataNet users frequent the channel #houston (note: all channel names begin in #). To join #houston: type /join #houston.

    3.  The syntax for leaving a channel is /part #channelname.
